December 24, 2011 - Word of the Day: celebrate

Because this is Christmas Eve, I've chosen the word "celebrate" as the word of the day. We use this verb for holidays, birthdays, victories, promotions, and other events that deserve some special honor and recognition.

  • We celebrate Christmas with our family every year.
  • Jerry's family is going to celebrate Christmas in Hawaii this year.
  • Donna's grandmother will celebrate her 90th birthday next week.
  • There was a celebration among the troops when they left Iraq. (The word "celebration" is a noun.)
  • Let's celebrate Tanya's promotion to general manager by going out tonight.
  • Joyce and Harold are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary today.

snow Most people who live in North America like to see snow on the ground as they are celebrating the holidays.
