June 4, 2011 - Word of the Day: thrill
Today's word of the day was suggested to me by Ozlem who I met in the Red Level chat room this morning. The word "thrill" can be a verb, a noun, or an adjective:
As an adjective, you can use "thrilled" or "thrilling." These words express excitement:
- The roller coaster ride was thrilling.
- We went to see a really thrilling movie.
- How thrilling!
- I'm thrilled.
As a verb it expresses a person's feelings of happiness:
- The Star Wars movies have been thrilling audiences since the 1970s.
- Sheila was thrilled by the news of her daughter's pregnancy.
As a noun, "a thrill" is something fun and exciting, but it can also mean the opposite when someone uses the word with sarcasm:
- It was a great thrill to meet the President of the United States.
- Tom has to go to Iowa next week. That should be a thrill. (sarcasm)
