The word "scary" is an adjective that you can use when something frightens you or causes you to feel afraid or experience fear.

  • He's a scary monster. scary monster
  • The boy feels scared. (Use "scared" as a verb.)
  • Do you like to watch scary movies?
  • That was the scariest movie I have ever seen. (superlative form of the adjective)

You can also use "scary" when describing people or things that cause intimidation or uncertainty.

  • Our English teacher is one scary dude.
  • The weather is looking kind of scary right now.
  • There were a lot of scary people riding the bus today.
  • Donna said that the chemistry test was scary. She doesn't think she did very well on it.
  • This is kind of a scary neighborhood. Let's get out of here.
  • That fish looks too scary to eat.

Use "scare" as a verb:

  • That move scared me. (past tense)
  • I was scared by that movie. (past tense, passive voice)
