There are many different kinds of nets:
| If you throw a basketball through the net, you score two points. |

He's using a butterfly net to catch butterflies. |

She's using a net to catch fish. |
 |
Sometimes the word "internet" is shortened to "net."
He's surfing the net.
(He's looking for information on the internet.) |

In business, the word "net" refers to the money that you make after you deduct your business expenses and taxes:
She made a net profit of $89,000 from her business last year.
(Her gross profit was $146,000, but she had to pay taxes and she had a lot of expenses.) |
