These pronouns are used when you describe a thing or an animal.

subject = it

  • A: What is it?
  • B: It is a guitar.

a guitar

object = it

  • A: Can you play it?
  • B: Yes, I can play it.

a guitar

possessive adjective = its

  • The dog is looking for its owner.

Note: If you don’t know the gender of an animal, use "it" or "its" when describing it.

possessive pronoun = its

It is very difficult (but not impossible) to use "its" as a possessive pronoun.

reflexive pronoun = itself

  • The computer turns itself off after half an hour of inactivity.

Use "itself" when describing machines or automation.

Note: When writing, it is important to know the difference between "it’s" and "its."

  • it’s = it is
  • its = a possessive adjective or pronoun
