(be) made

The verbs "be" + "make" can indicate where, how, when, and of what material something is created. It’s extremely useful when describing the production of things.

  • A: What is this vase made of?
  • B: It’s made of clay.
  • A: Where was it made?
  • B: It was made in Mexico.

  • A: What is this guitar made of?  
  • B: It’s made of wood.
  • A: Where was it made?
  • B: It was made in Korea.
  • A: What are these wrenches made of?
  • B: They’re made of steel.

This comb is made of plastic.

It’s a plastic comb.

  • A: When was this lamp made?
  • B: It’s not old. It was made just a few years ago, but it looks like it was made a long time ago.
  • A: When were these spring rolls made?
  • B: They were made just an hour ago.
  • A: Where was this toy made?
  • B: It was made in China.
  • A: Where was this bike made?
  • B: The parts were made in China, but her father put it together.
  • A: How was this mask made?
  • B: It was made by hand. Someone carved it out of a piece of wood.

(be) made by hand =

  • A: How was this chair made?
  • B: It was made by hand. It wasn’t made in a factory.
