Spin

October 3, 2014 – Word of the Day:  spin

When something or someone turns around and around, you can use the verb "spin." We also use "spin" when something is created. This is an irregular verb:

• Laura’s car spun around on the highway and landed in the ditch during the snowstorm.
• My head feels like it’s spinning. I have to lie down.
• Do you know how to spin a basketball on your finger?
• Vinyl records play music by spinning around on a turntable.
• This machine can spin out thousands of products every hour.
• Spiders spin webs in order to catch flies.
• Our washing machine hasn’t been spinning correctly. It needs to be fixed.
• We have some great new ideas for our companies. The wheels are spinning. (This is an expression. It means that a person is in the process of thinking.)

He likes to spin around in swivel chairs.
