A crack is an opening created accidentally, intentionally, or through natural forces.

When soil gets very dry, it cracks. The soil is cracked.
The ice is beginning to crack. There are cracks in the ice.
His windshield was cracked by a rock. Now he has a cracked windshield.
You crack open an egg by hitting it with something hard.
Lightning cracks. It makes a cracking sound.
