knuckle

A knuckle is that part of the hand where the fingers join the hand. This word is usually used in the plural form: knuckles.

Knuckles look like this:

  • If you make a fist and use it to hit someone, the knuckles do the most damage.
  • If you don’t shut up, I’m going to give you a knuckle sandwich. (knuckle sandwich = a punch with a fist. This is an expression.)
  • Kevin scraped his knuckles against the pavement when he fell off of his skateboard.
  • Can you crack your knuckles? (crack (one’s) knuckles: to apply pressure to the joints of the fingers. This makes a popping sound.)
