A shark is a predatory animal. It’s a large type of fish that has a reputation for being dangerous.
Sharks are often identified by a large dorsal fin, visible when swimming close to the surface of the water.
Sharks are feared and admired for their killer instincts. Of course, like all fish they have to eat, and as they sit at the top of the food chain, their prey are other fish or mammals such as seals and sea lions. Sharks rarely eat people, but they are known to attack a lone swimmer from time to time.
When a person is associated with the word "shark," it usually means the person preys on other people. (prey = feed upon)
A loan shark is a person who makes personal loans at very high rates of interest. If you can’t get a loan from a bank or other legal institution involved in lending money, you might go to a loan shark. Loan sharks are very aggressive in collecting money that is owed to them. Don’t borrow money from a loan shark.
A card shark is a person who is very good at games that involve playing cards, such as poker. A card shark usually plays cards for money, convincing another player or players to bet large sums of money on the outcome of a game of poker or blackjack.
