try

Use the verb "try" when you do something for the first time or you do something that is difficult. A person who tries doesn’t give up. (give up = stop trying).

• The students tried to get all of their work done before the end of class.
• Farnoosh tries and tries but she still doesn’t understand certain verbs in English.
• You should try this bike. It’s very comfortable. (try = use something or try something for the first time.)
• Do you want to try this restaurant?
• Try to call me when you arrive in Los Angeles.
• I tried calling her, but there was no answer.
• Henrietta tried on several pairs of shoes at the shoe store.
• Everything is being tried by the doctors to save the man’s life. (The verb "try" in this sentence is in the present continuous passive voice.)
• Let’s try to get to bed early tonight.
• Charles and Doris have tried to be good parents to their children.
• You aren’t trying hard enough. Keep trying!

He tried to motivate his chickens to lay more eggs.

This word is also used as a noun:

• Go ahead and give it a try.
• That was a good try.
• Give it another try.
