November 3, 2014 – Word of the Day:  conserve

To conserve something is to save it. The supply of the thing being saved might be too low, so an effort is made to secure the supply.

• People in California are being asked to conserve water.
• To conserve energy, we keep our thermostat set at 63 degrees in the winter.
• Brian is trying to conserve on gas by driving a hybrid car. (hybrid car = gas and electric power)
• We should take a rest. We have to conserve our energy if we’re ever going to climb to the top of this mountain.
• In order to conserve time, the planners of the event scheduled simultaneous activities.
• Adding insulation to the attic of your house helps to conserve heat inside the home.

Recycling paper, glass, and plastic is a great way to conserve natural resources.

The word "conservation" is a noun:

• The company saved a lot of money on energy through conservation.
• Conservation efforts for the bald eagle have really paid off. Their numbers are increasing.
• My neighbor says he doesn’t believe in conservation. He uses many different machines and energy sources without any regard to their effects on the environment.
• One of the many ways that we can reduce the effects of climate change is through conservation.
