review

To review is to look at something again or examine something. This word is often used for plans, school activities, criticism, evaluations, and end-of-the-year assessments.

• Students review their homework assignments in preparation for the test.
• Teachers help students review material that they have learned so that it’s not forgotten.
• Let’s review.
• Leaders in the community reviewed plans for a new grocery store.
• Supervisors review employees when deciding on whether or not to give them a raise.
• Derrick reviews his budget on a regular basis so that he knows how much he can spend.

They’re reviewing some plans together.

In these examples, the word "review" is a noun:

• The cafe received a good review.
• The website, Yelp, provides customer reviews for a variety of businesses.
• This website has received generally good reviews.
• A few of my videos have received negative reviews.
• Star Wars: The Force Awakens has received mostly good reviews.
• The reviews for the play were negative, so few people went to see it.
• Sandra received a bad performance review at work.
• CNN always highlights the year in review at the end of the year.

The person who writes or creates a review is called a reviewer.

• Reviewers gave the film high praise.
• The essays were sent to professional reviewers who decided on the merit of each student’s writing.
• Reviewers of restaurants usually dine anonymously so as not to receive special treatment at the places they want to review.
