To lurk is to watch someone from a secret location or to observe people from a place that’s dark or hidden.

There’s an alligator lurking in the water.

There’s a cat lurking in the grass.

Two men are lurking beneath a bridge.

• The police caught a man lurking outside of someone’s window.
• A lurker is a person who lurks.
• People lurk in chat rooms online.
• Danger lurks in countries where law and order has broken down.
• Lurking in the future is the prospect of a world that is getting warmer and warmer with each passing year.
