The word "sake" is used when referring to the reason something exists or something has to happen. It’s similar to words like "good" or "safety."

  • We’re doing this for your own sake–even if you don’t like it.
  • A move to Canada will be good for the sake of the family.

  • Missions to Mars and other planets are conducted for the sake of science and the future of humanity.

This word is often found inside of expressions or exclamations of frustration:

  • Oh, for heaven’s sake.
  • Oh, for goodness sake! Stop it.
  • For God’s sake! Don’t do that!
  • Oh, for Pete’s sake! Quit complaining.
