When the word "clip" is used as a verb, it means to cut something.

You can use a pair of nail clippers to clip nails.
Clippers are used to clip bushes and shrubs.
People who clip hair use a scissors, or clippers.

As a noun, a clip is an object that holds things together:

A paper clip holds together pieces of paper.
Some clips are large enough and strong enough to hold many pages together.
People use hair clips to hold their hair in place.
A clipboard holds paper. The person who uses the clipboard can write while walking or standing.

We also use the word "clip" when talking about speed:

• A sail ship can move at a pretty good clip when the wind is blowing.
