Use the word "scam" when a company or a person cheats or fools someone for money.

The diet pills that Yolanda purchased turned out to be a scam.
Don’t waste your money on lottery tickets. The lottery is a scam.
It’s nothing but a scam.
Dirk McMaster was involved in several scams and eventually went to jail for mail fraud.
That guy is a scam artist.
If someone promises you easy money or wants you to be involved in a get-rich-quick proposal, it’s most likely a scam.
A scam alert went out to people who received an email requesting social security numbers.
The FBI was in on the scam and arrested everyone who was involved. (in on the scam = to know that something is false or illegal)
