The word "math" is a shorter form of the word "mathematics." Math involves the use of numbers to determine amounts, figure out measurements or distances, and solve problems.

  • Sylvia is studying math. She’s in a math class. Her math teacher is Mr. Jefferson. He’s a wiz when it comes to math. (wiz = a very smart person)
  • Oscar uses a lot of math at work. He’s got a knack for working with numbers.
  • Terry isn’t very good at math. Math is her least favorite subject.
  • Are you good at math?
  • Do you like math?
  • People who are good at math often become engineers, doctors, or scientists.

The word "math" uses an unvoiced "th" sound. If you have trouble forming this sound, click on the link above.

Note: Over the years I’ve been a teacher, I’ve heard some of my students uses the word "math" in the plural form. I think this is done in British English, but in most cases, Americans don’t put that "s" at the end of "math."
